Developing a new renewable fuel strategy for NSW

We are developing a renewable fuel strategy for NSW that will diversify and expand our local renewable fuel industry. Feedback from the consultation will help shape this strategy, which is planned for release in mid-2025.

A thriving renewable fuel industry will provide NSW with significant economic growth, attract investment, and create jobs and opportunities for businesses and communities. It will also help NSW deliver 4 strategic objectives:

What are renewable fuels

Renewable fuels have the potential to transform our energy landscape and are critical to achieving NSW’s emission reduction goals and reaching net zero by 2050. They provide sustainable, long-term replacements for fossil fuels in key sectors and additional short-term options to decarbonise. Examples of renewable fuels include:

  • green hydrogen
  • biogas and biomethane
  • biodiesel and renewable diesel
  • methanol
  • sustainable aviation fuel.

The Renewable Fuel Scheme

The August 2024 consultation sought feedback on whether the Renewable Fuel Scheme should be expanded to include additional renewable fuels and liable parties.
