Locations for electric vehicle fast charging stations announced – and they’re closer than you think!
We’re working to make NSW the easiest place to buy and use an electric vehicle (EV) in Australia, with a $149 million investment to develop a world-class charging network across the state.
You’ll see approximately 250 fast and ultra-fast charging stations popping up around NSW in coming years. There will be at least 4 fast or ultra-fast chargers per station every 5 km in metropolitan areas and at 100 km intervals across all major NSW highways. Its’ all part of NSW Government getting your state EV-ready.
Powered by 100% renewable electricity, these new EV fast charging stations ensure widespread, accessible, world-class public EV charging coverage right across NSW.
How station locations were selected
As part of round one of the NSW EV Fast Charging Grants, the fast charging station map below shows you the locations of the first 86 stations bolstering the growing NSW EV network.
The locations for public fast charging infrastructure across NSW (referred to as optimal zones) have been chosen using key insights, including a range of technical, social, and economic considerations. Each optimal zone has been chosen based on:
- projected electric vehicle adoption in the area
- traffic movements
- tourism data
- vehicle ownership
- local points of interest
- location of major cabling across NSW
- available substation capacities.
NSW Electric Vehicle Strategy
Providing access to fast charging is a key action under the NSW Electric Vehicle Strategy. Our investment will support NSW communities and encourage growth of the EV market.
- Feel confident buying an EV through the development of a broad, visible and accessible fast charging network.
- Metro or regional. Stay connected across the state with stations popping up based on priority zones.
- The NSW EV fast charging network is future proof, designed to maximise grid support and reduce emissions till 2030 and beyond.

Fast charging station FAQ
Charging costs are based on kWh (a unit of energy). Currently public fast charging costs between 40c – 80c per kWh and this is determined by the market.
This depends on the state of charge of the vehicle and it’s capabilities, but some modern EVs can charge from 10-80% in as little as 10-15 minutes.
They will be run by private charge point operators. These grantees in round one are Ampol, BP, Evie Networks, Tesla, the NRMA, Zeus Renewables.
Some stations will have on-site solar systems, but in general all station operators will measure the amount of energy consumed at their stations and purchase an equivalent amount of renewable energy from accredited renewable generators.
Each fast charging station needs to go through a rigorous and highly regulated connection assessment and approval process. This process ensures each station will not have a negative impact on the electricity grid. In addition, many of the stations have an onsite battery storage system, with 10MWh of battery storage being included at these 86 charging stations.
“Fast charging” begins at 50kW, while “ultra-fast” refers to a 350kW charger. Each NSW Government funded station will have a minimum of 2 charging bays with 175kW chargers and 2 with 350kW chargers.
The new fast charging stations installed will charge EVs by delivering direct current (DC) power. DC charging delivers much higher power, and is vital to minimise time spent charging.
EV chargers are categorised according to power level, and input voltage into the charger. Level three fast charging stations have a range of 50kW to 350kW DC, whereas level one and level two chargers use AC power and charge at a rate of less than 50kW.
The plugs equipped at the new stations are the CHAdeMO or CCS Type 2 plugs. These are the plug types used in Australia in accordance with industry standards.
Fast charging stations can resemble a series of bowsers at a typical petrol station, however they will be identifiable by dedicated bays for EV vehicles, appropriate signage, and range of locations. The specific designs will differ depending on the private charge point operators.
Based on the funding criteria set by the NSW Government, the functionality and accessibility of the charging infrastructure will be consistent across all co-funded fast charging stations. In order to make NSW the easiest place to own an EV, each of these stations will have a minimum of 4 charging bays.
Some stations will commence construction from November 2022, and all 86 stations will be constructed by September 2024.
Yes. The total program budget is $149 million and future funding rounds will support the construction of approximately 170-180 additional stations.
The NSW Government is committed to providing a EV charging network that allows travel across all corners of the state. Bids have been assessed for merit in relation to co-location with amenities and local attractions.
The amenities available will differ depending on individual charging locations. These may include restrooms, food outlets, WIFI connection, and convenience stores.
This program is being jointly funded between private industry and the NSW Government. The private investment will be over $160 million and in total the initiative will create 210 jobs during the infrastructure construction phase.
The Master Plan shows optimal zones across all of NSW. The NSW Government will not be co-funding the construction of charging stations in all optimal zones. The Master Plan is also a guide for industry to help them consider where it might be best to build charging stations into the future. As stations are most effective in areas with higher vehicles density, metropolitan areas initially require more stations to accommodate the larger number of vehicles.
