We are working with industry to develop a thriving green hydrogen industry in NSW.
Hydrogen is a versatile fuel with the power to decarbonise NSW’s high-emitting and hard-to-abate industries, such as transport and freight, manufacturing, and agriculture. This will help pave the way for a net zero emissions future while driving economic growth by generating up to $80 billion in investment by 2050. By embracing the potential of green hydrogen and investing in kick-starting the hydrogen industry, we can create new jobs, provide energy security and grow NSW’s economy.
NSW's hydrogen advantage
Our nation-leading $3 billion NSW Hydrogen Strategy delivers incentives aimed at driving down green hydrogen production costs, launching new industries, and providing future-focused training. This supports the Net Zero Plan Stage 1: 2020-2030 and our legislated goal to cut emissions by 70% by 2035 and achieve net zero by 2050.
Combining our policy framework and incentives with natural resources and established infrastructure, NSW is Australia’s leading hydrogen investment destination for global-scale projects. Our natural resources for energy generation include abundant solar and wind. Our established infrastructure and deep talent pool include:
- 2 deepwater import and export ports at Port of Newcastle and Port Kembla
- existing ammonia production
- Australia’s largest integrated steelworks at Port Kembla
- 3 major interstate highways
- Australia’s largest skilled workforce
- 5 Renewable Energy Zones with an extensive interconnected electricity grid.
