We’re committed to achieving net zero emissions by 2050, but we can’t do this alone. We need to work with industry, financial, research and government partners to accelerate the uptake of low emissions products, services and materials across the transport, building and housing sectors.
To support this, we’re developing technical specifications and piloting innovative projects to ensure NSW households, businesses and transport can transition to net zero. We’re doing this by delivering work across three key sectors:
Transport | Building materials | Households | |
The issue | Projected to be Australia’s single largest source of carbon emissions by 2030. | Carbon emissions from the full lifecycle of construction materials (from extraction to disposal) accounts for 5-10% of Australia’s emissions. | Household gas and electricity use needs to be reduced by close to 50% to achieve net zero by 2050. |
What we're doing in 2022-24 | Producing guides to install electric vehicle (EV) chargers in homes and businesses. | Specifying low carbon concrete to support industry and increase the use of recycled content. | Helping households use less energy and make energy efficiency upgrades. |
What we're doing from 2024-27 | Helping the NSW transport sector transition to net zero and a circular economy. | Encouraging industry and government to use low emissions building materials | Using energy performance data to help households make energy efficient choices. |
This important work is supported with funding from the NSW Environmental Trust.
